There’s something so special about the relationship between dads and daughters, and I’m fortunate enough to have two of them. Being a dad was my favorite role in life (that is, until being a grandfather came along).
When each of my girls was born, I remember sitting in the hospital room holding them, looking down at their tiny faces, and wondering who they’d become when they grew up. Well, now I know, and I couldn’t be prouder of either one of them.
Hollie lives in Italy, so we don’t get to see her very often, and I’ll share about her in another post. But Chelsie is right here close, so I see her several times a week.
Chelsie is a Headstart teacher for the Salem School District. Soon after she started working for the district, I decided to take an afternoon and go visit her Headstart class to see what it was all about.
I was amazed. Here was my “little girl”, he stubborn one, the challenging one, dealing with great patience and love with all these little three and four year olds, nurturing them, teaching them and doing it in such a heartwarming way. I knew she’d found her niche; her purpose in life.
Watching her made me realize why I was put on this earth: To create this wonderful person who was going to have such an impact on so many little lives.
When Chelsie got married two years ago, I arranged for a special dance for me and both my daughters. I came across a song that really expressed how I felt about both of them and about my role as a dad, and I wanted to share it with the world:
Martina McBride’s “In My Daughter’s Eyes”. Here are the words.
In my daughter’s eyes I am a hero
I am strong and wise and I know no fear
But the truth is plain to see
She was sent to rescue me
I see who I wanna be
In my daughter’s eyes
In my daughter’s eyes everyone is equal
Darkness turns to light and the
world is at peace
This miracle God gave to me gives me
strength when I am weak
I find reason to believe
In my daughter’s eyes
And when she wraps her hand
around my finger
Oh it puts a smile in my heart
Everything becomes a little clearer
I realize what life is all about
It’s hangin’ on when your heart
has had enough
It’s giving more when you feel like giving up
I’ve seen the light
It’s in my daughter’s eyes
In my daughter’s eyes I can see the future
A reflection of who I am and what will be
Though she’ll grow and someday leave
Maybe raise a family
When I’m gone I hope you see how happy
she made me
For I’ll be there
In my daughter’s eyes
As we approach Father’s day, I realize that in addition to honoring fathers, it’s a great time to honor those who made us become the fathers that we are; these little lives that are placed in our hands for us to nurture and guide through life.
Having adult daughters if wonderful, I love being dad, but I especially treasure the rare times when I still get to be “daddy”.
