A very unusual kind of Best Friends

When we talk about Best Friends portraits, we really had humans in mind. But I couldn’t resist capturing this on video and sharing it.

This is my 80 pound Golden Retriever, Crosby, and our new little 2 pound kitten Shadow.

Crosby loves everything and everybody, and the minute he laid eyes on Shadow, he wanted her to be his friend. Shadow, being only six or eight weeks old, didn’t know that cats and dogs aren’t supposed to be buddies, found a playmate; Our older cats generally ignored her play advances, so she took to Crosby quickly.

They’re now best friends.

They tussle like this all the time. It’s so comical to watch this BIG dog and this little cat. Crosby is so gentle; as gentle as he can be with his big mouth, big teeth, big paws etc. I think the entire cat would fit into his mouth if he tried.

But Shadow loves the attention. Even if she comes out of it rather wet with doggy saliva.

And Crosby seeks her out.

The other day, he came to where I was in the basement and let me know he needed something by licking my hand as I sat at my desk. He’ll usually lead me to what he needs – food, water, outside etc.

This time, as I got up from my desk he led me upstairs to my daughter’s room and asked to be let in. When I opened the door, there was the kitten, and he headed right in to see her.

I’m hoping to get a really nice portrait of the two of them as time goes along, for this truly is a unique relationship; one I think will last a lifetime.
